Winter is when your solar works hardest for the least sun — but there's a simple way to keep your battery full without paying a cent for the power. Victoria now has free off-peak electricity windows, usually a few hours in the middle of the day, and most modern batteries can be set to charge automatically during them.

On short winter days, when your panels aren't quite filling the battery on their own, that means you can top the battery up for nothing and still run your home off stored power right through the expensive evening peak.
